Buffalo Grove Police Department issued the following announcement on May 3.
The Buffalo Grove Police Department is excited to announce its annual Bike Rodeo and Safety Clinic on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from noon until 2:00 p.m.
The event will be at a new location this year; activities will be held in the southwest parking lot of St. Mary’s Church, located at 10 N. Buffalo Grove Road, which is the lot nearest to the football field.
The new location offers participants a chance to visit the Buffalo Grove Public Works building, 51 Raupp Boulevard, to also attend the Public Works Open House, which runs from 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. on the same day.
Buffalo Grove Police officers will be on hand to educate participants about the realistic skills they need to ride a bicycle safely. Some of the skills to be tested will include maneuvering around stationary objects, emergency braking, balance and more.
Participants can show off their steering skills and practice safe riding while operating their bicycles through a skills course designed by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office. The Wheeling Wheelmen Bicycle Club will be on-site to provide a free bicycle helmet fitting, and an experienced bike technician will inspect bicycles for safety. Children up to the age of 12 can bring bicycles and helmets to participate in this event.
Participants ages 5-12 will be judged based on their skill level, and awards will be given out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in different age categories at the end of the rodeo. There will be giveaways for participants, including the grand prize, a new bicycle. Winners need not be present, and pre-registration is not required.
