Woodland Community Consolidated School District 50 Board of Education met Nov. 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

Call to Order Vice President Joe De Rosa called the regular session of the Board of Education of Woodland School District 50 to order at 6:02 PM.

Roll Call

Move to enter Closed Session A motion was made by David Weinstein and seconded by Jennifer Haack to enter into closed session at 6:04 PM.

On Roll Call, the votes were:

Nays: None

The motion carried.

Return to Open Session A motion was made by Joe De Rosa and seconded by David Weinstein to return to open session at 7:08 PM.

Call to Order President Carla Little reconvened the open session of the regular meeting of the Board of Education at 7:09 PM.

Opening Ceremony The Pledge of Allegiance was presented by Boy Scout Troop 671.

Approval of Agenda A motion was made by Joe De Rosa and seconded by Lizzy Helgren to approve the agenda as presented.

On Roll Call, the votes were:

Tax Levy Hearing Board President Carla Little opened the Tax Levy Hearing. Associate Superintendent Chris Bobek provided a presentation of the 2019 tax levy.

There were no questions regarding the tax levy.

A motion was made by Jennifer Haack and seconded by Lizzy Helgren to adjourn the Tax Levy Hearing.

On Roll Call, the votes were:

Superintendent Showcase A. Eagle Scout Project – Buddy Benches at Intermediate – Middle School student Aaron Richards

presented four “Buddy Benches” to Woodland Intermediate School for his Eagle Scout Project. The purpose of the bench is for a student who does not have someone to play with, other students will know to invite them to play. The materials for the benches was donated by local businesses and Arron recruited volunteers to help construct the benches.

The Board thanked Aaron for the benches and complimented him on his exemplary service to the community.

B. National School Board Member Day Recognition – November 15 marked National School Board

Member Day. The Board was presented with student art work and notes of appreciation by Middle School Principal Tiffany Drake and Intermediate School Principal Derek Straight. Board members were thanked for their leadership and compassion for the students and staff of Woodland.

Citizen Statements There were none.

Motion 1 

A motion was made by Joe De Rosa and seconded by David Weinstein to approve the 2019 Tax Levy Resolution and Certificate of Tax Levy for the year 2019.

Motion 3 

A motion was made by Carla Little and seconded by Joe De Rosa to approve the Resolution to Levy Certain Special Education Taxes for Special Education District IMRF Purposes.

Reports/Discussion Items 

A. Discussion of 2019 IASB Resolutions Committee Report 

This topic was brought back from the October governing meeting. The Board individually reviewed each of the resolutions and gave direction to Illinois Association of School Board (IASB) delegate Dr. Carla Little. The Board confirmed consensus to not support Resolution #1, Student Safety.

B. Written Report on Illinois School Report Card 

The Board received a written report on the Illinois State Board of Education school report card which was released to the public on October 31. Demographics, assessment scores and financial data is included in each school and the district in the report cards. Links to the report cards are found on the district webpage, the Teaching and Learning website, Illinois State Board of Education website and at Illinois Report card website with hardcopies available in each of the schools.

Board Improvement and Operations 

A. Discussion of Attendance at the Equity Symposium, Advocacy Institute and National School Board

Association Conferences. The Board discussed who would be interested in attending the Equity Symposium and Advocacy Institute in Washington DC February 1-4. Five members expressed interest in attending.

Dr. Casey shared that the National School Board Association (NSBA) conference will be held in Chicago this year April 4-6. There will be two presentations given by Woodland School District 50 this year at the conference.

Dr. Casey shared that Dr. VandenBroek is working with Attorney Teri Engler regarding the Illinois State Board of Education letter shared with all school districts regarding time out and physical restraint. The administration will follow up with the Board. The administration will continue to share information with the Boars as it becomes available. once we have additional information.

Status of Requests from Board Members/Recap/Future Board Items/Correspondence 

1. Correspondence to the Board and direction on responses The draft response was approved and will be sent by Laura Campanella on November 19.

2. Receipt of any Freedom of Information Act Requests 

There were no FOIA requests for the month.

Announcements and Board Committee Reports 

Associate Superintendent Chris Bobek shared that he and member Helgren attended the Lake Division meeting held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019. Member Little has earned recognition as Master Board Member #4 for her involvement and attendance at workshops and Members De Rosa, Helgren and Haack have earned the recognition as Master Board Member #1.

Congratulations to Members Little, De Rosa, Helgren and Haack for their accomplishments.

A motion was made by Joe De Rosa and seconded by Nasima Patel to adjourn the November 21 governing meeting at 8:33 PM.
