ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 51: Edly-Allen Urges Students to Participate in Contests Celebrating 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

51

Illinois State House District 51 issued the following announcement on April 13

While local students are home from school, state Rep. Mary Edly-Allen, D-Libertyville, is alerting students of all ages of coloring, poster, illustration and essay contests that celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment.

“As a teacher, I want to help students understand the importance of civic engagement and participating in our democracy,” said Edly-Allen. “As a woman in government, I am thrilled that these contests will give students the opportunity to learn about the 19th Amendment and the long history of the women who fought so hard for equality.”

In celebration of Law Day on May 1 and the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which granted women the right to vote, the Judges of the Circuit Court of Lake County are hosting a variety of contests for students in grades K-12. The theme for this year is “Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100.” Students in grades K through 3 are invited to participate in a coloring contest, students grades 4 through 6 are invited to participate in a poster contest, students in grades 7 through 8 may participate in an essay contest, and students grades 6 through 12 may participate in an illustration contest. All submissions are due April 27, and specific information and guidelines on each contest may be found at http://19thcircuitcourt.state.il.us/1446/Law-Day-Activities.

“While unfortunately many of the planned Law Day activities were canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, these contests are an easy and safe way for students of all ages to learn more about the 19th Amendment, show off their creativity and be recognized for their work,” Edly-Allen. “I hope to see the students in my district well-represented in this contest, and wish all of our student artists and writers the best of luck!”
