ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 53: Walker Reminds Drivers of Secretary of State Deadline Extensions

53

Illinois State House District 53 issued the following announcement on April 24

State Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, is reassuring residents about the extension of expiration dates for driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations and other transactions handled by the state until at least 90 days after driver facilities are safe to reopen.

“With the pandemic throwing uncertainty into everyone’s long-term plans, it is vital that the state take steps to ease mandatory deadlines such as driver’s license and registration renewals,” Walker said. “Illinois drivers can rest assured that their license and registration will remain valid as we handle this public health crisis.”

With all Secretary of State and driver services facilities closed to the public, expiration dates for driver’s licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations and other transactions will be extended at least 90 days after driver services facilities safely reopen. Secretary of State Jesse White’s office is encouraging drivers to visit their website at https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/ as online services remain available and open.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security pushed back the REAL ID deadline one year to Oct. 1, 2021. Current Illinois driver’s licenses or identification cards will continue to be accepted at airports, military bases and federal facilities.

“I appreciate the Secretary of State’s decision to recognize the critical need for these extensions until non-essential services are safely able to reopen,” Walker said. “This is a challenging time for all of us, and it’s important that we continue to be responsive on a government level to make things easier if possible.”
