City of Highland Park issued the following announcement on Oct. 29.

October marks National Women's Small Business Month, recognizing the contributions and achievements of women entrepreneurs and business owners across the country - including nearly 70 women-owned Highland Park businesses!

According to the Small Business Administration and data from the US Census Bureau (2016), over 1.1 million American small businesses with employees were women-owned, employing over 9 million individuals. When including businesses without employees, the total rises to 9.9 million women-owned businesses! 99.9% are small businesses.

Celebrated each October, National Women's Small Business Month also commemorates the Women's Business Ownership Act of 1988. This legislation created federal advisory committee the National Women's Business Council, eliminated state laws requiring women to have a male relative or husband co-sign a business loan, and established the Women's Business Center program to provide business education and support to female entrepreneurs. Today, the Small Business Administration offers a wealth of resources for women business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs at sba.gov, including the Office of Women's Ownership.
