Rep. Chris Bos (R-Lake Zurich) is among those supporting a redevelopment plan for the Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville.

“It’s worked well for the Sunset Pavilion at Breezewald Park," Bos said in a March 11 Facebook post linking to a Chicago Tribune article. "I’ll for sure be checking this out when it opens.”

The plan calls for a beer garden to replace the public beach, paving the way for visitors to be able to partake of locally brewed draft beer as a way of staying cool over the long, hot summer.

Lake County Forest Preserves District Board member Paul Frank of Highland Park said operating the beach simply became too costly, especially when compared to the prospect of a beer garden, which have proven to be instant money makers.

Local officials said they are hoping to have the garden up and running by the fast-approaching Memorial Day weekend, noting that all COVID-19 restrictions will be readily observed.
