Long haul: longest wait for Deer Park inventor’s patents approved in week ending Aug. 14

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending Aug. 14 in Deer Park was 4,618 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Scott A. Spoo for a flat fold respirator having flanges disposed on the mask body. It was filed on Dec. 18, 2008 before being approved on Aug. 10, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were three patents granted for Deer Park inventors in the week ending Aug. 14.
