Patent office takes 713 days to approve Mettawa inventor’s patent in week ending Aug. 21

Patent 8

The longest time between a patent being filed and granted in the week ending Aug. 21 in Mettawa was 713 days, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The patent application was filed by Brunswick Corporation for a method and apparatus for avoiding erosion in a high pressure die casting shot sleeve for use with low iron aluminum silicon alloys. It was filed on Sep. 4, 2019 before being approved on Aug. 17, 2021.

Though patents are required for inventions and products, the granting of a patent is not a guarantee for success. Dennis Crouch, co-director of the Center for Intellectual Property & Entrepreneurship said roughly 50 percent of patents expire prematurely due to costs.

There were three patents granted for Mettawa inventors in the week ending Aug. 21.
