Avery Gilbert, an incoming freshman at Trinity College and a Grayslake North High School graduate and Lake Villa resident, died unexpectedly after having only been on campus for three days.
Gilbert collapsed in his dorm and was found unresponsive by his roommate. The Lake County Coroner has yet to provide a cause of death.
Trinity football coach Willie Tillman released a statement on Gilbert’s death.
“On behalf of the TIU football program, I am deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of incoming freshman Avery Gilbert on Wednesday, August 10," Tillman said. "As a program, we are devastated. As Avery was just beginning his collegiate career, I'd like to extend my deepest condolences to Avery's family and loved ones and will provide my full support to those who need it. We are working with the university to ensure that our student-athletes have the emotional support they need. Through love and prayer, we will come together as a university."
“The 2022 season will be dedicated to Avery Gilbert as we honor his name and #87.”
Tillman also posted a bible passage.
“‘To be absent from the body is to be present with the lord,’ - 2 Corinthians 5:8.”
Trinity College is part of Trinity International University. The college has 700 undergraduates in addition to the around 1,000 graduate students studying at TIU. Its football team participates in NAIA.
Gilbert was set to take part in this year’s football program as a wide receiver. His passing was noted on TIU’s Facebook page.
"The Trinity Community mourns the loss of incoming football player, Avery Gilbert. A graduate of Grayslake North High School, Avery hailed from Lake Villa, IL, and was known for his infectious energy, generosity, and joy. Please join us in prayer for Avery's friends and family, our students, and the coaching staff,” TIU said on Facebook.
A fundraiser has been set up for Gibert’s memorial. So far it has raised $3,978 against a goal of $20,000.
