The James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts (JLC) at College of Lake County (CLC) continues its fall 2022 season with two unique mainstage music events that showcase legendary artists while honoring America’s shared humanity.
The longest-running Carpenters tribute in North America, Close to You: The Music of the Carpenters returns to the JLC as part of their 12-year anniversary tour at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. Singer and Lake County resident Lisa Rock recreates the trademark sound of the Carpenters’ melodic, chart-topping pop music, sharing stories along the way. Along with a six-piece backing band, Rock pays homage to Karen Carpenter’s timeless voice and the duo’s meticulously crafted songs that appealed to a variety of audiences throughout the 70s, including “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays” and fan favorite, “Close to You.” Tickets are $30, or $28 for seniors and military and $15 for students.
With a core message of “there is only one race and that is the human race,” The Rodney Marsalis Philadelphia Big Brass debuts at the JLC at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12. This stellar collective of virtuoso musicians effortlessly mixes classical music, big band swing, New Orleans jazz and straight-ahead jazz in a powerful and spiritually uplifting musical performance. In their moving, multi-media production “Brothers on the Battlefield: The Power of Love,” six amazing brass players, drums, piano and a narrator unite to create an intimate connection between the audience and performers, resulting in a healing and joyful celebration of life. Tickets are $42, or $38 for seniors and military and $20 for students.
