Lake County Committee of the Whole met Sept. 9.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

1. Call to Order

Chair Hart called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m.

2. Pledge of Allegiance

Member Snarski led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Chair Hart stated she appreciated everyone's attention to this topic and spoke about the impact that everyday gun violence has on communities.

CONSENT AGENDA (Item 8.1)

Board action approving the Committee of the Whole minutes from August 5, 2022.

Due to not having a physical quorum, no action was taken.

REGULAR AGENDA

8.2 22-1281

Discussion on Impact of Gun Violence on Public Health.

Chair Hart introduced Shane Selig, a City of Highland Park Certified Emergency Response Team member who was present at the Highland Park mass shooting event that occurred during the July 4, 2022 Independence Day parade. Mr. Selig presented on the details of the event and the effects on the community.

Lake County Health Department Executive Director Mark Pfister spoke about gun violence as a public health system issue and presented on Lake County Firearm Fatalities and Nonfatal Hospitalizations from 2018 through 2020. Discussion ensued.

State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart provided an update on the Gun Violence Prevention Initiative.

Chair Hart presented on the deadliest mass shootings in the United States in the last decade, assault firearms, types of firearm injuries and the measurable costs and impact of gun violence. Discussion ensued.
