The Waukegan Community Unit School District #60 Board of Education welcomed Victor Hinojosa as its newest student board ambassador during its Jan. 24 meeting.

Hinojosa is the sixth student to hold the post and is working toward a career in medicine, it was noted during the meeting. The position was created after a suggestion by board member Anita Hanna, and it has proved to be a successful endeavor.

“I was chosen by the popular voice of the most important and influential members of this district, its own students,” Hinojosa said in the meeting.

Outgoing student board ambassador Joanna Guiterrez provided her final report during the meeting after serving for a year. She offered thanks to the board and community for their support during her term and was appreciative of the opportunity to help better the district and community.

During the meeting, held on her 17th birthday, Guiterrez also noted that she hopes to continue to support and raise funds for the Memory Walk project.

Hinojosa was sworn in by Guiterrez, as is the tradition to have the outgoing ambassador swear in the successor, and he will serve until January 2024. Hinojosa then offered his first report, giving his thanks to the board for the opportunity and discussing his outlook for the future of the district.

“I ran a campaign of revolution and change,” he said in prepared remarks. “I promised to be a voice of the people, not the top and few. I'm here to fulfill that promise.”

In addition to serving as a student ambassador board member, Hinojosa is also involved in the JROTC program and serves as a councilmember on the student advisory board for the Illinois State School Board.
