The Waukegan City Council has made a decision to purchase body cameras, tasers, and license plate reader cameras for the Police Department. During the council's Oct. 16 meeting, they waived competitive bidding and approved the purchase of these crucial equipment.

According to the Waukegan City Council agenda update for the meeting, the Police Department requested the city to buy seven Body 4 body cameras, four Taser 10 tasers, and three Fleet 3 license plate reader camera systems from Axon Enterprise. The letter from Axon explained that their products and services were the only ones available that met the department's needs, making them the sole source for these items.

The cost for the 5-year contract is $148,613, which will be covered by funds budgeted for the CO-Responder program. It is important to note that the city will be fully reimbursed for this purchase through the CO-Responder grant.

The council's decision to waive competitive bidding and approve the purchase was documented in the Waukegan City Council agenda update.

The acquisition of body cameras, tasers, and license plate reader cameras is a significant step forward for the Waukegan Police Department. These tools will enhance transparency and accountability in law enforcement operations, ensuring the safety of both officers and the community they serve.
