Illinois lawmakers need to stop working against small business owners

Lawmakers in Springfield should reassess some of their recent legislation that creates an unprofitable environment for small business owners.

Burdensome costs created by our representatives over the past few years have limited my small gym from reaching its true potential.

High taxes and the inflation of operating expenses are the result of poor policy decisions by lawmakers who, at times, seem disconcerted with helping regular, hard-working people like us on Main Street.

Whether it's driving up energy prices or adding expensive one-size-fits-all employee compensation requirements, the direction of legislation is consistently moving away from supporting small businesses.

The burdens small businesses face are becoming insurmountable, and we urgently need reform that offers respite from a backbreaking tax regime.

My small gym is a place where individuals in our community come to forge healthier, stronger versions of themselves. For a long time, I thought Springfield was a place where our representatives went to build a healthier, stronger version of our state.

We need lawmakers to live up to their job of preserving the American dream.

To truly honor and preserve the entrepreneurial spirit of Illinois, we must prioritize protecting and nurturing its smallest entities. A dream, a vision, a small business – these are the seeds from which greatness grows. Let us not stifle their growth with prohibitive costs.
