Twenty Village of Mundelein residences will be able to keep chickens on their single-family residential property starting in 2024, according to a press release posted on the Village of Mundelein website. The new ordinance, called the Keeping of Chicken Ordinance, aims to ensure that the initiative is humane for the chickens and not disruptive to neighbors.

Applications for the chicken-keeping licenses will be available starting on Nov. 6 at the Mundelein Village Hall. Residents must submit a building permit application for their chicken coop along with the application. The deadline for applications is Nov. 30, or until 20 licenses are granted.

Under the ordinance, chickens are limited to personal use and must be kept in an enclosed pen or coop, which can only be built in backyards. Roosters are prohibited. A property inspection will be conducted before a license is issued.

The number of chickens allowed depends on the size of the property. Single-family properties between 6,000 and 7,999 square feet are allowed two chickens if their application is successful. Properties from 8,000 square feet to 9,999 square feet can have four chickens, and properties 10,000 square feet and larger can keep six chickens with a village license.

The Village of Mundelein implemented the Keeping of Chicken Ordinance to give residents the opportunity to raise chickens for personal use while ensuring the well-being of the animals and maintaining a harmonious neighborhood.
