City of North Chicago Public Works Committee met Jan. 16.

Here are the minutes provided by committee:

Vice Chair, Alderman Smith called the meeting to order.

ROLL CALL:

Present: Jackson, Coleman, Allen, Smith, Murphy

Absent: Evans, January

I. DISCUSSION OF PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT:

Public Works Superintendent Clarence (Tommy) Johnson provided an overview of the monthly report.

He explained placed sidewalks on 10th St.; removed trees and replaced damaged signs in the 1st Ward;

(6) new employees starting for water treatment certification; installed 2nd weather station on Sheridan Rd.

II. DISCUSSION OF WATER DEPARTMENT MONTHLY REPORT:

There was no discussion.

III. DISCUSSION OF ENGINEER MONTHLY REPORT:

There was no discussion.

IV. DISCUSSION/REVIEW OF STP (SERVICE TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM) PROJECTS AND FUNDING APPLICATIONS:

Attorney Simon questioned clarification of the acronym; Engineer Steve Cieslica explained it should reflect STP (Surface Transportation Program).

Engineer Steve Cieslica explained the topic was informative for Council members; IL grant program for North Chicago; Phase I Argonne project was complete; $1.34 million in STP grant funding Broadway Ave. & Argonne Dr. to 2027 $12.53 million designated for rebuilding of Argonne Dr. and Natoma rebuild; $16.7 million funding for estimation of $20 million Project; reapplied for additional streets; $4.2 million in STP funding for remaining streets; Green Bay-Argonne Dr. intersection, Sheridan Rd, Dugdale Ave., 10th Street, Jackson St. from 10th to 14th St., Jackson from 14th St. to Broadway Ave., mainly for STP funding; $1 million per project if eligible for funding. It was questionable with the smaller resurfacing project. The City would be placed on a contingency list from other municipalities.

Alderman Allen questioned clarification of curbing with the streets and its expense. Mr. Cieslica stated had applied for funding.

Alderman Smith questioned Victoria Ave. status; Mr. Cieslica explained a temporary patching was complete and currently starting the watermain project from Victoria to 16th St. and weather permitting would commence in February thru March 2024 replacing the lead lines.

Alderman Coleman asked if the City could request Argonne Dr. last block of Natoma Ave; Mr. Cieslica stated would need additional federal funding for completion of street and a separate project. 16th St. was in the process of being redone and sidewalks needed repair and if it was on the list; Mr. Cieslica explained was replacing much of the sidewalk on 16th St. It was budgeted accordingly. Alderman Allen moved, seconded by Alderman Murphy that the Public Works Committee Meeting stand adjourned.
