Jay Swidler, Chairman of Vernon Township Republicans, said that the selection of Pope Leo XIV is a significant moment for America, symbolizing global recognition of the nation's values of freedom and faith. Swidler made his statement to Lake County Gazette.
"As Americans, we ought to feel immense pride in the selection of Pope Leo XIV—it is a powerful reminder of how far our nation has come," said Swidler. "To see an American chosen to lead the Catholic Church is a testament to our country's principles of freedom, opportunity, and faith. Pope Leo XIV's selection reflects the strength and spirit of the American people on the world stage. It is an honor to know that this revered role is held by a citizen of the United States."
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Cardinal Robert Prevost, a 69-year-old missionary born in Chicago, was elected as Pope Leo XIV, marking the first time an American has held the papacy in the Catholic Church’s 2,000-year history. Previously leading the Vatican’s office of bishops, Prevost served extensively in Peru. He emphasized unity in his inaugural speech, identifying himself as a Christian, Augustinian, and bishop. His election followed four voting sessions over two days. Having been elevated by the late Pope Francis to Prefect for the Dicastery for Bishops in 2023, Prevost entered the May conclave with significant prominence.
In a May 8 post on Truth Social, President Trump commented on Pope Leo XIV's recent appointment. The President said: "Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!"
Swidler, a resident of Buffalo Grove, was first elected as Chairman of the Vernon Township Republicans in 2024. According to the organization’s website, Swidler is "focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Vernon Township voters."
