Visitors to the Lake Forest Central Business District are being reminded to walk their electronic scooters (e-scooters) and bicycles on sidewalks, or risk a fine of up to $300 per offense.

In October 2023, the Lake Forest City Council approved an ordinance prohibiting the use of recreational-powered devices, such as e-scooters and electric bikes, on sidewalks within the district, according to a press release from Lake Forest. To avoid fines, riders must dismount their devices and walk them within the boundaries of the Central Business District.

According to another Lake Forest press release, licensed motor vehicle operators holding a valid license may operate their e-bikes or e-scooters on the street.

The Lake Forest Police Department issued warnings in autumn as a courtesy to allow residents time to adjust to the new regulation. The warning included a map of the Central Business District for people to familiarize themselves with its boundaries. Signs have also been placed within the district reminding individuals of this regulation. Starting from April 1st week, officers will begin issuing tickets.

Non-electric bicycles must also be walked on sidewalks in the Central Business District between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., under city ordinance, according to another press release from Lake Forest.

For safety reasons, the police department recommends wearing a helmet and looking both ways before riding through any intersection or across a driveway. They also advise against using electronic devices including earbuds and headphones while operating a scooter in order to avoid distractions. Riders should travel solo and show respect for others, advises the police department.
