Lake County is inviting individuals to join its Digital Equity Coalition, an initiative aimed at enhancing digital equity within the county. The coalition is open to participation from government bodies, private entities, community groups, and nonprofit organizations.
"High-speed internet access is so important for everything from remote work to school to telehealth to keeping in touch with friends and family," said Jennifer Clark, a Lake County Board member. "Lake County is committed to investing in broadband infrastructure and digital access programs, so all residents are equipped with the resources needed to participate in an increasingly digital society," according to a Lake County press release.
Clark also serves as chair of the board's Special Committee on Broadband. She recently spoke about the county's efforts at the Broadband Communities Summit held in The Woodlands, Texas. According to a Lake County press release, the summit brought together industry and community leaders, property owners, and infrastructure builders to discuss strategies for delivering connectivity across various communities nationwide.
According to another Lake County press release, Illinois has positioned itself to receive more than $1 billion in federal broadband funding over the next five years. This comes in addition to state investments.
During her panelist role at the Summit, Clark shared details about Lake County's steps towards expanding countywide access to high-speed broadband infrastructure. According to a Lake County press release, launching the Lake County Digital Growth Initiative has positioned the county as a leader in addressing digital equity issues. The county aims first to understand the current state of high-speed internet service reliability and digital equity before crafting solutions.
According to yet another Lake County press release, there are more than 3,800 households and businesses within areas of Lake County that have internet service considered unserved or underserved. This situation places these communities below Federal Communications Commission standards for high-speed internet.
