Waukegan City Council voted to censure Alderperson Keith Turner on a 6-3 vote for posting a graphic image of human remains found in Waukegan on the shore of Lake Michigan to the "Friends of Keith Turner" social media page. The remains are the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Waukegan Police Department and the Lake County Coroner.
According to the Waukegan City Council's June 3 meeting agenda, the resolution to censure Turner stated that he posted the graphic image on May 16 on a Facebook page he independently maintained for political campaigns. This action was said to be outside his legislative authority as a Waukegan alderperson.
The resolution further stated that families of victims of heinous crimes have a right to grieve in private, and Turner's actions were said to disregard this right and expose the family of the victim to unnecessary attention and pain.
Alderperson Thomas Hayes made the motion to censure, with Alderperson Lynn Florian seconding that motion. According to the meeting agenda, Alderpersons Victor Felix, Sylvia Bolton, and Jose Guzman voted in favor of censure. Turner was joined in voting against the censure by Alderpersons Edith Newsome and Michael Donnenwirth.
