Waukegan City Engineer Jesus Alquicira will ask the City Council to approve a $600,000 grant application to renovate and transform the Jack Benny Plaza. The council and its Community Development Committee will hear the proposal during meetings on September 3.
According to the city council agenda, the city would seek an Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grant for the Jack Benny Plaza project. The grant funding would provide up to 100 percent of the funding needed for the project at a maximum award of $600,000.
The agenda stated that deterioration and aging have affected the physical structures and systems at Jack Benny Plaza. The building remains need to be removed, and brick pavers and sub-base must be redesigned to provide adequate drainage and sewer storm tie-in.
The city's mission in the project is to improve and expand the plaza's life cycle to meet a new generation of Waukegan downtown development, according to the agenda. The city aims to see how spaces like plazas and street interventions can revitalize neighborhoods, foster community interaction, and create vibrant and livable urban environments.
