This year, several Illinois House Republicans have focused on promoting blood donation in their communities. Representatives Dan Ugaste, Tony McCombie, Jeff Keicher, C.D. Davidsmeyer, Brad Stephens, Jackie Haas, and Tom Weber have organized successful blood drives in their districts.

Blood demand remains constant across Illinois and the U.S., with the American Red Cross indicating that someone requires blood every two seconds. However, only about 3% of eligible donors contribute annually, leading to potential shortages that endanger lives.

Recent years have seen increased challenges in maintaining adequate blood supplies. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a decline in school and college-based blood drives and a significant reduction in donations. According to America’s Blood Centers, there was over a 30% drop in donations from individuals aged 16-24 between 2019 and 2021. Older adults have helped bridge this gap.

In response to these issues, Illinois House Republicans are advocating for increased donations within their districts. Encouraging turnout at these events has been noted as they plan to continue these efforts into 2025.
