On January 13, 2025, a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to Grass Lake School District 36 by the Lake County Gazette. The request sought information about the number of non-U.S. citizens currently enrolled in the school district.

The Illinois-based media organization emphasized its commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs. It specifically requested details about the number of "migrants" or non-U.S. citizens currently enrolled in the school district.

The Lake County Gazette further explained that access to public records is crucial for fulfilling their professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given their role in disseminating information, they believe they are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
