Union Pacific Pedestrian Gate Update

Date:

Mar 25, 2025

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) holds the authority to administer and enforce safety requirements for track, facilities, and equipment belonging to all railroads in Illinois. This includes approving the installation of pedestrian gates. The ICC has participated in multiple site visits and meetings with the Village, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and Union Pacific.

Collaboratively, with guidance from the ICC, a required project scope was developed to initiate the state-dictated ICC administrative process. As a result of this collaborative effort, it was confirmed earlier this week that the Village and IDOT will proceed as co-petitioners to seek authorization for pedestrian gate installation by Union Pacific at Railroad crossings on Hough Street, Main Street, and Hillside Avenue.

IDOT will spearhead the filing process and anticipates submitting the petition early in the new year following drafting and reviews by respective legal councils.

The legal proceedings are expected to take time; however, the Village remains committed to advancing this project as swiftly as possible. More information is expected to be shared in January or February as progress continues.
