Rep. Weber Introduces Legislation to Fund Veterinary Care for Retired Police Dogs

Mar 26, 2025

Rep. Weber has introduced House Bill 3140, aimed at providing stable funding for the care of retired police dogs. According to Rep. Weber, "Our police dogs do so much to take care of our communities, yet they often aren’t able to receive adequate care when they retire. "

The proposed legislation would create the Care for Retired Police Dogs Program, directing the University of Illinois to select a non-profit organization to distribute grants up to $1,500 to former handlers or adopters of retired police dogs. These grants would be funded by purchasing Illinois Police K-9 Memorial Plates for a $25 annual fee.

Rep. Weber emphasized that this bill provides funding at no cost to taxpayers: "Our police dogs deserve healthy, comfortable lives after retirement, and we can help them thrive after their years of service by providing financial relief for their handlers. "

Supporters are encouraged to contact their legislators and urge them to vote "yes" on House Bill 3140.
