The Wheaton Police Department, Warrenville Police Department, and Community Unit School District 200 have issued a joint statement addressing safety concerns related to a non-school-related activity involving students.
Each spring, high school seniors nationwide participate in a game known as "senior assassin. " This game, which has gained popularity on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, involves participants attempting to "eliminate" each other using water guns or Nerf-style toy guns over several weeks. Students may be seen walking through neighborhoods or hiding in public places with these toy weapons as they try to surprise their opponents.
The statement emphasizes that this is not a CUSD 200-sponsored activity and that "senior assassin" is prohibited on CUSD 200 school property, at any school- or district-sponsored event, or in any manner that disrupts the learning environment or violates school rules. The districts stress potential safety concerns associated with the game.
"While students may think of this as a game, it poses a potential for very real safety concerns within our communities," the statement said.
The police departments do not condone the activity and aim to raise awareness about related safety issues. These include the possibility of community members becoming alarmed if they perceive an individual armed with a weapon; participants interfering with traffic and endangering themselves or others; and other unintended consequences.
Parents are urged to discuss safety concerns associated with the "senior assassin" game with their children. The authorities recommend discussing potential misunderstandings and emphasizing that playing this game can easily be misinterpreted as a real threat in public.
"The safety of all individuals in our communities is our top priority," the statement added. "We are providing this message to spread awareness about this activity and its potential risks. "
