The Village of Barrington has introduced a new therapy dog program within its police department, featuring a 17-week-old male English Labrador puppy named Oliver. As the department’s first-ever “paw-officer,” Oliver will support the mental well-being of officers while fostering positive connections with the community.
At the March 10 Committee of the Whole meeting, Deputy Police Chief Lori Allsteadt presented program details to the Village Board, highlighting how the therapy dog will help reduce stress and anxiety among officers. By offering emotional support, Oliver will assist in managing trauma, boosting morale, and promoting a healthier work environment.
“This therapy dog is more than just a support resource for our officers – he will also serve as a bridge to our community,” said Police Chief David Daigle. “Oliver’s friendly, approachable nature will encourage positive interactions, particularly in situations where individuals might feel hesitant to approach an officer. He’ll help break down barriers and create meaningful conversations. ”
Oliver will undergo basic obedience and therapy training, with certification anticipated in 2026. Unlike working canine officers, therapy dogs require less intensive training, making them an accessible and effective tool for supporting both law enforcement personnel and the public.
The Barrington Police Department began exploring the program in 2023. Officer Sebastian Szpara has been selected as Oliver’s primary handler, with Deputy Chief Allsteadt serving as the backup. As part of their community engagement efforts, Officer Szpara will also bring Oliver on visits to Barrington schools and other local events to strengthen relationships with the community.
Oliver was donated to the department by SOUL Harbour Ranch Animal Therapy Program through a generous grant provided to them. Ongoing support for the program is made possible by donations from the Foglia Family Foundation and Francis Houlihan.
“This new program aligns with our commitment to supporting the well-being of our officers and enhancing connections with the community,” said Village President Karen Darch. “We’re excited to see how Oliver’s presence will positively impact both our police department and the residents of Barrington. ”
The Village of Barrington and its police department thanked SOUL Harbour Ranch Animal Therapy Program, the Foglia Family Foundation, and Houlihan for their generosity and support.
