Jay Swidler, Chairman of Vernon Township Republicans, expressed support for President Trump's new trade agreement with China. "President Trump’s bold new trade agreement with China sends a powerful message—the days of exploiting the United States are over," Swidler said to the Lake County Gazette.
"President Trump is once again proving his unwavering commitment to American workers and industries," said Swidler. "His latest trade deal with China marks a decisive step toward fair, reciprocal trade. By slashing unfair tariffs and opening China's market, he's giving U.S. businesses the opportunity to thrive globally. This deal is a turning point in restoring America's economic power and pride."
According to Fox News, following trade discussions in Geneva, China has agreed to open its markets to American businesses. Although some details remain unresolved, President Trump emphasized that China's commitment represents a significant shift from previous imbalances. He described the development as "the most important thing to happen," underscoring the opportunity for U.S. companies to compete fairly in China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led negotiations that resulted in temporary tariff reductions, though tariffs on cars, steel, and aluminum will persist.
In a May 12 Fact Sheet published on its website, the White House reported on the new trade agreement with China secured by President Trump. The deal reduces tariffs by 115% on both sides while maintaining a 10% baseline tariff and suspends recent retaliatory measures. China will pause its 34% tariff for 90 days and remove non-tariff countermeasures. The U.S. will suspend its reciprocal 34% tariff but retain key existing tariffs related to fentanyl and national security concerns. Both nations have pledged ongoing talks aimed at addressing the $295.4 billion U.S. trade deficit with China.
Swidler, who resides in Buffalo Grove, was first elected as Chairman of the Vernon Township Republicans in 2024. According to the organization’s website, he is "focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Vernon Township voters."
