Lake Forest School District 67 announced that students participated in a spring exploration walk at Middlefork Farm with Superintendent Dr. Montgomery, supported by the Spirit of 67 Foundation.
According to the announcement, Lake Forest School District 67 students engaged in a nature walk at Middlefork Farm, organized with support from Lake Forest Open Lands Association and Elawa Farm Foundation. Guided by Superintendent Dr. Montgomery, students explored the trail using bird guides, binoculars, and nature bingo cards. They observed wildlife and visited farm animals like goats and chickens before concluding the day with birdwatching.
Montgomery serves as superintendent for both Lake Forest Community High School District 115 and Elementary District 67, overseeing school operations, programs, finances, and staffing. He began his career in Ohio as a science teacher and later served as a principal and superintendent, notably advancing STEM education. Since joining Lake Forest in 2021, he has led strategic planning, community engagement efforts, and a successful $105.7 million referendum. Montgomery is involved in several national education organizations and continues to support leadership development and educational innovation. He previously taught graduate coursework in educational leadership at the American College of Education.
The Spirit of 67 Foundation is a nonprofit organization established in 1985 dedicated to funding educational enrichment in Lake Forest School District 67. Supporting Cherokee, Everett, Sheridan Elementary Schools, and Deer Path Middle School, the foundation raises funds through donations and events to provide educational and cultural opportunities beyond standard school funding. Each year, staff, students, and community members submit grant applications reviewed and awarded in April. Since its founding, the Spirit of 67 has funded nearly 800 grants totaling over $6.5 million to enhance student experiences in language arts, fine arts, STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics), wellness, and more through innovative programs and resources.
Lake Forest Elementary School District 67 serves approximately 1,600 students from Pre-K through grade eight. The district includes three elementary schools—Cherokee Elementary (K-4), Everett Elementary (K-4), Sheridan Elementary (Pre-K-4)—and Deer Path Middle School (5-8). Known for its innovative instructional practices, District 67 emphasizes inclusive education and personalized learning experiences that support academic, social-emotional development according to its website.
