On June 9, 2025, the Lindenhurst Police Department responded to a residence in the 500 block of Beck Rd. to investigate a driveway seal-coating ruse. Two male suspects arrived at the residence in a gray, older model GMC Sierra truck and offered to sealcoat the driveway for a small fee. The resident agreed, but once the job was complete, one of the suspects demanded significantly more money. The suspects fled when the resident became suspicious and called police.

Lindenhurst Police Officers located one suspect nearby who was determined to be a juvenile. He was taken into custody and later released to a relative with charges pending. The second suspect is described as an older, heavyset white male wearing a hat, white shirt, and blue pants.

Common ruses may include offers to repair gutters, fences or perform tree trimming and landscaping; blacktop or seal-coating services; inquiries about water supply or pressure; claims of electrical problems outside the home; repairing bricks or pavers; false statements about issues with neighboring houses; questions about property lines; and inquiries about homes for sale in the neighborhood.

The Lindenhurst Police warn residents to be vigilant against these scams and offer several safety tips:

- Do not allow anyone into your home unless you know them personally or have a scheduled appointment.

- If a solicitor comes to your residence, note their vehicle's make, model, color, type as well as their attire and physical characteristics.

- Never leave your front door unlocked or unattended when speaking with a solicitor or utility worker.

- Legitimate utility or government workers will not object if asked for ID.

- Verify with relevant companies or agencies if an individual was sent to your residence.

- Call "911" immediately if scammers refuse to leave or pressure you into letting them in.

The Lindenhurst Police Department encourages anyone with additional information regarding this incident to contact them at (847) 356-5400. For further details on this community alert, please visit the Village's communications page.
