Waukegan is set to receive a new traffic signal at the intersection of Sunset and Northern Avenues, replacing the current four-way stop. This development comes as part of an agreement with Lake County, which also includes filling certain sidewalk gaps.
According to Lake County's proposal attached to the Waukegan City Council agenda for its June 16 meeting, the county will cover all engineering and construction costs for the traffic signal. The city will be responsible for 50% of its maintenance and future costs, along with 100% of the power bill. Sunset Avenue, known as County Highway 46, falls under county jurisdiction, while it is also within the city's jurisdiction.
The proposal further outlines that Lake County intends to complete a 70-foot gap in the existing sidewalk on the north side of Sunset Avenue, east of Illinois Route 131. Meanwhile, Waukegan aims to address two sidewalk gaps on Northern Avenue at both legs of the intersection. Under Lake County's non-motorized policy and with city cooperation, these sidewalk gaps will be installed at no cost to Waukegan if the city agrees to take ownership and future maintenance responsibility.
According to the city's meeting agenda, Alderperson Edith Newsome moved to approve this agreement between Waukegan and Lake County. Alderperson Lynn M. Florian seconded her motion, which was unanimously approved by a vote of 9-0.
