With Independence Day approaching, the Batavia Police Department is collaborating with the Illinois State Police and the Illinois Department of Transportation to initiate a traffic safety campaign. The initiative aims to remind drivers about the risks of impaired driving and ensure road safety during the holiday weekend.
"As with any long holiday weekend, we expect increased celebrations throughout the weekend leading up to the Fourth of July Holiday," said Chief Eric Blowers. "We urge everyone to celebrate responsibly. Please plan for a sober ride home before you leave the house — your safety and the safety of others depends on it."
The Batavia Police Department will focus on enforcing laws against alcohol and cannabis-impaired driving, as well as seat belt use, speeding, and distracted driving violations. The department advises making safety a priority whether attending a party, hosting friends, or visiting local venues. For those planning to drink, designating a sober driver in advance is recommended.
Walking while impaired can also pose dangers; therefore, arranging for a sober companion is advised if necessary. Designated drivers should be vigilant for pedestrians who may not obey traffic signals due to impairment.
The campaign emphasizes that safety involves making responsible choices rather than relying on luck. It offers several important tips: never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs; always designate a sober driver or use public transportation or ride-share services; report impaired drivers to law enforcement; prevent friends from driving while impaired by taking their keys; and always wear seat belts.
This Independence Day enforcement effort is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered by IDOT.
