The Lake County Health Department is advising residents to take steps to protect themselves from West Nile Virus. The department has outlined four main actions, known as the "4 D's," that can help reduce the risk of infection.

First, residents are encouraged to drain standing water from items around homes, yards, and businesses. Mosquitoes that carry West Nile Virus often breed in stagnant water.

Second, the department recommends using insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outdoors. It also suggests checking door and window screens for tight fits and holes to keep mosquitoes out.

Third, people should be cautious during dusk and dawn hours, which are peak times for mosquito activity.

Fourth, wearing long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes while outside can help prevent mosquito bites by covering exposed skin.

More information about preventing West Nile Virus is available on the Lake County Health Department’s Fight the Bite webpage at https://fightthebitenow.com/.
