Granite City schools announce early dismissal for August 27

Granite City Community Unit School District 9 has announced that all district buildings will dismiss students one hour early on Wednesday, August 27, following the regular Wednesday schedule. The Lake Educational Support Services Center will operate under its normal hours and is not affected by this change.

The early dismissal times for each school are as follows: Coolidge Junior High School (grades 7–8) from 7:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.; Granite City High School (grades 9–12) from 7:40 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.; and elementary schools—Frohardt, Grigsby, Maryville, Mitchell, Prather, and Wilson—from 8:20 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. Grigsby/Prather Pre-K will have no changes for the morning session (8:45 a.m.–11:15 a.m.) but will dismiss the afternoon session at 2:00 p.m., while Lake Educational Support Services Center will maintain its usual hours of 8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

Parents are encouraged to use the First View app, available in the App Store or Google Play, to track their student’s bus. The district code required for setup is V2Z3A.

In addition, all GCSD9 schools and the Board Office will be closed on Monday, September 1 in observance of Labor Day.

Granite City Community Unit School District 9 serves Madison County and includes Coolidge Junior High School, Frohardt Elementary School, Granite City High School, Grigsby Intermediate School, Maryville Elementary School, Mitchell Elementary School, Prather Elementary School, and Wilson Elementary School. According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education (source), the district employs around 320 teachers with an average salary of $67,898 before pension contributions; about three-quarters are women. The student population is composed of approximately 65 percent White students, nearly 16 percent Black students, almost 12 percent Hispanic students, and less than one percent Asian students (source). In fiscal year 2020, spending per student was $17,739 with total expenditures reaching over $106 million (source).
