Hugh Light "Shorty" Ray was born in Highland Park, Illinois, in 1884 and died on September 16, 1956, in Los Angeles, California, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. Alongside teaching, he worked as a football, basketball, and baseball official. In 1938, the NFL hired Ray as its first technical advisor on the rules and supervisor of officials.
