At the September 18 regular meeting of the Board of Education, Emerson Middle School recognized seventh-grade student Zainab Hakeem and physical education teacher Emmy Pasier for their contributions to the school community.

Emerson Principal Tessa Shulman commended Zainab for her leadership and kindness. Shulman said Zainab is known for her “kindness, inclusivity, and passion,” adding that she makes a meaningful difference at Emerson. Students in the Life Skills program described Zainab as someone who helps them “feel important and seen.” Shulman concluded, “We thank you for being such a wonderful Eagle, and we appreciate you.”

Teacher Emmy Pasier was also honored during the meeting. According to Shulman, Pasier has shown dedication by serving on committees, coaching, mentoring colleagues and students, and consistently supporting the school community. “She truly embodies our District’s motto of together we discover, learn, grow, and care,” said Shulman. “We are grateful for her continued leadership and service. Emerson is lucky to have you, Emmy. Thank you for all you do.”

Superintendent Dr. Ben Collins spoke about Pasier's commitment to students over nine years of knowing her. He highlighted her roles as a girls varsity softball and basketball coach at Maine South High School. "The amount of time you have put into the community, for all of the students here, is unmatched," said Dr. Collins.

“When we talk about someone who’s moving the culture towards that positive end, you are it,” added Dr. Collins. “You are the standard.”

Both individuals were congratulated by school officials for setting examples within District 64.
