Wheaton/Warrenville Community Unit School District 200 is inviting parents to a free event aimed at helping families protect children online. The session, titled "Keeping Our Kids Cybersafe and Empowering Parents," will be led by Detective Rachel Reiger (RET), a nationally recognized Child Abuse Investigator Specialist. It is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15, 2025, from 12:00–1:30 p.m. at the Wheaton Park District Community Center.
The event will address several topics relevant to online safety for children and teens. These include understanding cybercrime and the importance of recognizing that “no one online is anonymous.” Parents will learn protocols for responding when a child discloses incidents such as cyber-bullying, sexting, or sextortion. The session will also cover how to report criminal cyber-bullying and discuss the risks associated with popular apps.
Other subjects include an overview of how internet investigations are conducted using subpoenas and search warrants, as well as information about social media laws covering harassment, cyberstalking, and false impersonation. The session aims to help parents understand how to protect their child’s digital footprint and empower them to report cybercrime and harassment.
The event will end with an open question-and-answer forum where parents can ask questions directly.
