Jaxon Duke advances to IHSA golf sectional after regional performance

Jaxon Duke has qualified for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Golf Sectional after scoring 92 at the regional tournament held on Wednesday. Duke will compete in the sectional meet scheduled for Monday, October 6, at Mauh-Nah-Tee Country Club in Rockford.

Corey Lovell, another member of the Coalers golf team, also posted a score of 92. He entered a four-way playoff for the final two qualifying spots but was eliminated after the second hole. Coach Harlan Kennell commented on their efforts: “I’m proud of both of these guys and the entire Coaler Golf Team on a great season.”

The Coalers finished eighth overall as a team. Other participants included Frankie Ponio with a score of 96, McKale Perino with 98, Cody Scheer with 100, and Trevor Walker with 100.

Coal City Community Unit School District 1 includes schools such as Coal City Early Childhood Center, Coal City Elementary School, Coal City High School, Coal City Intermediate School, and Coal City Middle School. The district serves Grundy and Will counties (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). According to state education data, there are 153 teachers in the district with an average salary of $69,297. Of these teachers, about 78 percent are women and just over 22 percent are men; none have more than ten absences in a school year (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

Demographically, nearly 87 percent of students in the district identify as White, while about 10 percent identify as Hispanic (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). In terms of spending, the district allocated $21,619 per student in 2020 for a total expenditure exceeding $47 million (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

“I’m proud of both of these guys and the entire Coaler Golf Team on a great season,” said Coach Harlan Kennell.
