Lake Forest Community High School District 115 has announced the introduction of new bicycles and bike desks, provided by the Lake Forest High School Foundation (LFHS Foundation), to enhance student wellness and engagement in learning.
According to the LFHS Foundation, a grant facilitated the acquisition of 35 bicycles and helmets aimed at supporting outdoor learning and wellness activities. These bikes are utilized in Ray Werner’s wellness classes, replacing a previous system reliant on student-owned or donated equipment. This initiative enables students to participate in biking activities during both fall and spring semesters, ensuring equitable access to outdoor physical exercise. The program has also been incorporated into other departments such as cross-country and Mindful Movement for endurance and wellness training. Some students have reportedly learned to ride for the first time through this program, expanding its impact.
The LFHS Foundation provides financial support for educational initiatives at Lake Forest High School through grants benefiting students, faculty, and staff. Since its inception in 2002, the foundation has awarded over 290 grants totaling more than $2.2 million for various projects including Makerspace, Business Incubator, and 21st-century learning labs. It collaborates with teachers, students, and administrators to review grant applications and allocate resources effectively. Grants have facilitated technology upgrades, collaborative learning spaces, as well as academic and extracurricular programs at the school.
