The village of Deerfield's Appearance Review Commission recently met at Deerfield Village Hall to issue its judgment on the aesthetics of several local business owners' proposed signs.
The commission approved a sign for Mia's Fine Jewelry consisting of white letters on a black awning. Initial objections from Commissioner Sherry Flores about the thickness of the letters on the sign and from Commission Chairman Dick Coen about the cleanliness of the awning's frame were overlooked.
The commission also approved signs for new hot dog restaurant Josh's On the Square, after a lengthy debate about the relation of the "J" in Josh's to the other letters on the sign and a commitment from owner Josh Kaplan to submit new drawings in which the words "On the Square" are vertically aligned with the "o" and "s" in "Josh."
The commission unanimously denied two different proposals from Raudel Castaneda of SM Deluxe Sign Company for the hairdresser Sports Clips, because the commission came up with too many suggested changes. Among the demands the commission sent Castaneda home with was to come up with a design that could appear black during the day and white at night.
Before adjourning, Village Planner Jean Spagnoli announced that new stamped concrete had been installed at the train station. When Commissioner Lisa Dunn expressed her concern that the brown concrete was too dark, Spagnoli reminded the commission that it matched the plans they approved.
Flores also submitted for the record a newspaper photo she noticed in which there was a Verizon sign the commission had not approved.
