The Zion City Council will hold a special meeting on 1 p.m. Friday at City Council Chambers in City Hall, 2828 Sheridan Road, to discuss Zion's response to ongoing financial challenges facing the state and its communities.
The city will vote on resolutions to file three different applications for Community Development Block Grants. The grants are awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and currently offer development assistance to over 1,200 communities across the country.
Zion is hoping to win grant funds for sidewalk replacement, installing handicap ramps, demolishing abandoned properties, fixing code violations and improving deteriorating building facades in Zion's business district.
Following the votes on the applications, Mayor Al Hill will lead a discussion of the city's budget deficit for the coming fiscal year.
