The village of Deerfield's Appearance Review Commission held its regular meeting Nov. 9 at Village Hall to review and revise the village's appearance code.
The commissioners considered criteria for building design, the relationship of a building to its surroundings, lighting as well as site design.
Under building design, the commissioners adjusted language relating to awnings. The code will not allow awnings that wrap around buildings nor will it permit awnings made from material that allows light to pass through.
The commissioners also reviewed several subsections of the appearance code for site designs, debating the feasibility of the existing code's detailed standards for plant diversity and types of plants in landscape designs. The group also clarified that mutli-stemmed trees are not permitted and considered requiting a mandatory five-foot plant buffer around the base of all buildings.
Under the appearance code for parking, the commissioners added a requirement for landscape islands every 12 consecutive parking spaces.
The commission did not make any changes to the code regulating the relationship of a building to its surroundings or lighting.
After discussion of the appearance code, Village Planner Jean Spagnoli reported to the commission that she had sent a violation notice to Queen's Nail for installing a sign that was different from the design approved by the commission. The sign that was installed had letters that were too large and used three colors instead of the two that were approved, Spagnoli said.
