The city of Highland Park is offering residents an opportunity to upgrade their sewer lines at a discounted rate.
The Voluntary Sewer Lateral Cost Sharing Program aims to encourage residents to reline or replace their sewer lines by offering to pay 20 percent of the cost, or $1,260, whichever is cheaper. The hope is that improved sewer connections will prevent or reduce the amount of property and house flooding from sewer backflows.
The program can also be used toward installation of a backflow-preventing device or overhead sewer system, which raises the lowest level of plumbing above the flood line for the sewer system it's connected to.
To be eligible, residents must live in a stand-alone single-family home and allow a city inspector to inspect their current sewer connection.
Any questions about the program should be directed toward Sewer Division Foreman Wayne Bauer who can be reached at 847-432-0807.
