Effective April 1, residents of Highland Park have the opportunity to co-mingle food scraps and yard waste for collection until Dec. 15.
Those opting for the combined collection program will receive a 35-gallon cart free of charge from Lakeshore Recycling Systems (LRS), city officials said.
Information on payment methods for the service is available on LRS’ website, where residents can enroll in the collection service electronically.
Customers have two options: a $225 subscription, with pickup scheduled on the same day as trash and recycling pickup, or a volume-based system in which residents attach stickers to their carts with a fee of $2.45 per sticker.
The city has made stickers available at seven locations, including Sunset Foods, Walgreens on Roger Williams Avenue, Walgreens on Elm Place, Jewel Osco, Mutual Ace, Heinen's of Bannockburn and City Hall.
Highland Park is offering food-scrap bins for $5 each for easy in-kitchen composting. Residents are counseled to use the countertop-sized kitchen bin to store food scraps until their respective pickup date each week, when they can dispose of the scraps by dumping them directly into the 35-gallon cart or a brown paper bag.
