The annual "Lure of the Local" art exhibition, established in 2022, will return for its fourth year with a focus on the theme "Portals." Organized by the Mundelein Arts Commission, the event aims to showcase creative work from artists who live and work in the local community.
According to organizers, this year's theme encourages participants and visitors to reflect on thresholds—both literal and metaphorical—that influence human experience. The concept of portals is intended to highlight transitions and changes in perception or reality. Organizers note that these transitions can be interpreted as architectural features, transformative moments, or spaces between inner and outer worlds.
The exhibition takes inspiration from Lucy Lippard’s book "The Lure of the Local," which examines how meaning is shaped by place, memory, and identity.
Local artists were invited to submit works interpreting the idea of portals using various mediums and approaches. The juried show will include awards such as Critic’s Choice, People’s Choice, and a Purchase Award.
"Our mission is to foster dialogue, elevate local voices, and cultivate a vibrant cultural landscape within our community," stated representatives from the Mundelein Arts Commission.
Now in its fourth year, "Lure of the Local" continues its goal of highlighting contemporary art emerging from within Mundelein’s own neighborhoods.
