Waukegan FD responds to 297 fires in 2016

Waukegan Fire Department responded to 1374 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Lake County Gazette.

The calls in Waukegan included 297 fires - 123 structure fires, 53 vehicle fires and 102 other fires. The fire department also responded to 19 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,073,515 in fire loss - or about $3,615 per fire.

The department also received one false call, including 101 malicious calls and 976 other false calls.

The calls resulted in three civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Waukegan Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 117 active employees and 123 retired or inactive employees, was $5,615,544 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $18,908 for every fire in 2016.
