Board of Health Report.

Protect Yourself and Fight Flu

Now is a good time to get your flu shot. It is important to get vaccinated before flu activity increases, as it takes about two weeks after vaccination for the body’s immune system to fully respond and for you to be protected.

The flu vaccine is the best way to prevent flu illness and serious flu complications, including those that can result in hospitalization.

Getting vaccinated protects people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like newborns and young children, older adults, and people with certain chronic health conditions.

The Health Department offers the flu vaccine by appointment at the Immunizations Clinic, located at 2303 Dodge Avenue in Waukegan. To make an appointment, call (847) 377-8470.

Retail clinics, pharmacies, and individual healthcare providers also provide flu shots. To find a convenient location to get your family’s flu vaccinations, visit flushot.healthmap.org. November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Lake County. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined.

Most lung cancers could be prevented because they are related to smoking or secondhand smoke.

About 36.5 million Americans still smoke cigarettes, and tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the world. The American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout event is Thursday, November 16. Encourage someone you know to use this date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. For help quitting smoking, contact the Health Department’s Tobacco Free Lake County program at (847) 377-8090.

November is also Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Lake County. Six percent of surveyed Lake County adults have been diagnosed with diabetes, and another 14 percent have prediabetes. However, many people are not aware that they have these conditions. Two presentations about diabetes prevention and management will occur this month. These events are free, open to the public, and include free prediabetes screening:

“Clear the Air: Tobacco, Diabetes, and You”, Wednesday, Nov. 15, 6:00-7:15 p.m. at the Zion-Benton Public Library, 2400 Gabriel Avenue, Zion.

“Break a Sweat: Exercise for Diabetes” a Spanish presentation on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Round Lake Area Public Library, 906 Hart Road, Round Lake. The earlier people are diagnosed with prediabetes, the more likely that they can reverse it and prevent type 2 diabetes. Take a free online test at doihaveprediabetes.org to see if you are at risk.

Open Enrollment for Health Insurance Marketplace: November 1-December 15

Open Enrollment is here. This is the time of year to register for health insurance benefits through the HealthCare.gov website, also known as the Health Insurance Marketplace. If you do not have insurance through an employer, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or other qualifying health insurance, you have from November 1 through December 15, 2017 to enroll in a health insurance plan.

Anyone who currently has coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace must review and renew their plan during Open Enrollment.

By law, each health insurance plan must cover essential health benefits such as hospitalizations, doctor visits, and prescription medicine.

Financial assistance is still available to individuals meeting the income eligibility criteria. HealthCare.gov is the only place you can get financial help with insurance costs. Illinois residents needing in-person assistance can visit getcoveredamerica.org to find local help.
