Waukegan FD responds to 269 fires in 2017

Waukegan Fire Department responded to 1258 calls in 2017 - 8.4 percent less than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Waukegan included 269 fires - 119 structure fires, 39 vehicle fires and 111 other fires. The fire department also responded to 13 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,723,430 in fire loss - or about $6,407 per fire.

The department also received 976 false calls, including 89 malicious calls and 887 other false calls.

The calls resulted in four civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Waukegan Fire Department had an annual budget of $3,644,374 in 2017.

The Waukegan Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 115 active employees and 127 retired or inactive employees, was $5,615,545 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $20,200 for every fire in 2016.
