HIGHLAND PARK POLICE DEPARTMENT: Search For Missing Swimmer Continues Along Lake Michigan Shore

Police 08

Highland Park Police Department issued the following announcement on Nov. 5.

The City of Highland Park Police and Fire Departments continue to coordinate with neighboring public safety agencies and other governmental entities in search of a 52-year old Elgin woman, identified as Lena Lemesh, who went missing in Lake Michigan near Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park on Sunday, November 4, 2018.

Highland Park Police and Fire personnel resumed the search at 8:00 AM on Monday, November 5, 2018. Search efforts include shoreline checks by foot, four boats deployed along the shore, assistance from the United States Coast Guard, Lake County Coroner’s Office canine unit, aerial searches conducted by the Chicago Police Department, an aircraft from Pilots for Hope, a volunteer aerial search and rescue group and support from the North Shore Yacht Club in Highland Park. Search operations will continue until sunset and will resume on Tuesday, November 6 at 8:00 AM. Police departments along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Illinois and Wisconsin have been advised to monitor their beaches for the missing swimmer.

Ms. Lemesh was participating in a recreational cold weather swim with a group of at least ten individuals on Sunday morning at Park Avenue Beach in Highland Park when the Police and Fire Departments were dispatched for a report of swimmers in distress.

Upon arrival, emergency responders encountered dangerous lake conditions and established that two swimmers were unaccounted for at the scene. Emergency personnel located and brought an unresponsive 46-year old Itasca man to the shore, identified by the Lake County Coroner as Stanislaw Wlosek Jr. The swimmer was immediately transported to Highland Park Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The City is asking anyone who sees anything in Lake Michigan or on shore which may be related to the missing swimmer, to please contact the City of Highland Park Police Department at 847.432.7730.
