Park District of Highland Park issued the following announcement on April 9.
The delivery of sand began on April 8 and will be completed by the end of the week. The delivery of stone will begin next week.
Project Overview
The Recreation Cove will be replenished with Birdseye Sand to protect the cove, the adjacent boardwalk, and playground. Stone will also be placed along the interior of the south breakwater to mitigate the passage of sand through this area. The project will be completed in Spring 2020.
A similar shoreline protection project was completed early last Fall at Rosewood’s nature and swimming coves. The buildings and boardwalk adjacent to both coves are situated closer to the shoreline and were in jeopardy of damage from potentially severe winter storms. That project protected the coves and structures successfully over this past winter. For additional information regarding the Rosewood Beach shoreline protection project, click here.
We understand this is a difficult time, and the Park District is taking great care to make fiscally responsible decisions. After careful consideration, our staff and the Park Board determined that protection of the recreation cove, the adjacent boardwalk, and playground at Rosewood Beach is necessary, and will be completed in Spring 2020.
During construction, Rosewood Beach, including the lower parking lot, will remain closed to pedestrians and vehicular traffic. The project is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete. In compliance with the City of Highland Park ordinances, the work will take place between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm on weekdays and 9 am and 5 pm on weekends.
Our park and beach neighbors should expect some inevitable construction traffic and noise. The trucks are expected to exit Highway 41 at Lake Cook Road and head east, then north on Saint Johns Avenue, turn right onto Lincolnwood Road, and follow Sheridan Road until reaching the Rosewood Beach entrance. Trucks will return using the same route.
We know that this will impact the neighborhood temporarily, and we thank you in advance for your patience and understanding. It is a priority for the Park District to move quickly to protect Rosewood Beach and continue providing safe beach access for our community.
Rosewood Beach is one of the Park District’s most heavily used facilities, and one of the most beautiful of our community’s assets. The near-historic high Lake Michigan water levels in the last year resulted in rapid beach erosion at Rosewood Beach. Infrastructure located at the back of the beach was in jeopardy of damage. The shoreline projects last Fall and this Spring are preventing further erosion and protecting our lakefront structures and ensure this community asset will serve Highland Park for current and future generations.
